Why does my package have both volumetric & actual weight?

Both actual& volumetric weight are showed on your account after package.However you will not be charged on volumetric weight if you select postal service such as EMS or Small air. Greater weight between volumetric & actual is used to calculate freight for all courier services. How to calculate volumetric weight?
